Picture this: you’re on the back patio. The sun is warm. The wind is blowing. Your wind chime tinkles. Oh wait, you don’t have a wind chime? Make one!
My mom has an old wind chime that I think was her grandmother’s. I love the sounds of a wind chime! I love the big ones with long pipes that make a peaceful gong kind of sound. I’m sure with time and materials, they would be rewarding to make, but this was a quick and fun project for me and my boys. I only bought one item for it and the rest I had at home! This DIY tutorial is for a chime that makes a little ding and looks cute.
Materials:
- hot glue gun
- tiny ceramic pot
- large glass or wood beads
- yarn/string and a large tapestry needle
- floral wire
- craft paint, brushes, q-tips
Step 1: Paint the tiny pot! I was feeling artsy so I painted a cherry tree branch on mine, but just polka dots, lines, zig-zags would be adorable! I got out q-tips to help make little polka dots along the inside rim of mine. The kids used them for dots on theirs, too! I think they turned out so cute. Let the paint dry before moving on.
Step 2: Decide what beads to use. Put them one at a time on a piece of string through the hole in the center and swing it against the side of the pot. Pick one based on the sound you like best. Use that one inside the pot and the others as decorations below. String the beads on your string in whatever manner you like. I used a tapestry needle to get mine to hang staggered on the yarn as shown in the following photos.
Step 3: Use floral wire to create a hanger for the top, as pictured below. Use hot glue to glue the string through the hole at the top of the pot. Put one bead on the hanger, then hot glue the bead and hanger at the top of the hole.
Step 4: Use yarn or string through the wire hanger to attach to a tree!
What do ya think?! I love the way these turned out. This is our second spring/summer in our house and I’m looking forward to tons of time by this beautiful magnolia tree and these cuties!
